Adrian the Counsellor
People often ask why I chose to open a private counselling practice. The truth is, it’s the natural outcome of a lifelong journey focused on children, families, and their emotional well-being.
I began my career as an elementary school teacher in private schools overseas. I loved being in the classroom—connecting with students, watching them grow. Over time, though, I became more and more interested in the emotional lives of children and how powerful a role that seemed to play in learning. That growing curiosity led me to a second career as a school counsellor.
For 17 years, I enjoyed the privilege of helping young children - and their parents - understand and cope with the emotional challenges that are a natural part of growing up. During that time, I learned one thing again and again: that secure attachments with loving adults are essential for children to thrive and succeed at school and in life.
My interest in working with adults grew naturally during those years. Parents would make appointments to discuss concerns they were having about their child’s emotional well-being. Very often, though, they found themselves wanting to share struggles they were having with their own. I saw time and again just how much internal weight parents carried, how alone they often felt, and how crucial it was for them to have their own emotional needs recognized and supported.
This is what led me to the counselling work that I now enjoy most today. I get to walk alongside my clients - literally and figuratively - as they explore the questions that bring them to me: Who am I now? Is this the life I actually want? If not, what changes will I need to make? What will I need to let go of? What is time for me to embrace?
